Notable Layoffs this Week

  • EV startup Fisker is laying off 15% of its employees as it struggles with funding, TechCrunch reports. The layoffs could affect around 200 people.

  • The Container Store is cutting 2.5% of its workforce as sales slow, Retail Dive reports. The move affects about 100 employees.

  • Google is laying off around 10 people from its 250-person trust and safety team, Bloomberg reports.

  • Citigroup is laying off 286 employees in New York, Reuters reports, a month after announcing it would cut 20,000 jobs over two years as part of a major restructuring.

  • Video game coming Electronic Arts is laying off 5% of its roughly 13,400 employees and will also reduce office space, CNBC writes.

  • Universal Music Group is planning to lay off some employees this year in order to cut costs, The Wall Street Journal writes. The news comes after the company reported an increase in profits last year.

💃 Meet Marta - The PMM that broke LinkedIn

Unless you’ve been off the grid, or only get your news on platforms that went down this week, you might have seen this well-edited, extremely relatable video of Marta Puerto documenting her layoff experience. Using engaging TikTok-esque jump cuts and fun graphics, she talks about the hundreds of job applications that led to nowhere and all she wanted was to meet face to face with someone.

Finally, she realized that all this time, she needed to be marketing a new product: Marta! Once she started treating her online persona like a product, her next steps became much clearer. Much like a SaaS product, she engaged in marketing (created a video) to reach an audience and preview the features (what she has to offer). At the end, there’s a clear call-to-action that leads recruiters / hiring managers to a landing page where they can learn more.

The most important part of this process is that it forced her to get clear on who she is and what a company would be getting if they hired her.

All of this goes by a term that you’re probably familiar with and you often roll your eyes at: Personal Branding

What is Personal Branding and why is it important?

A personal brand represents you, your values, and what you have to offer. Look at your online presence and see if can tell people the answer to “Who am I?”, “What do I do?”, and “Why does it matter?”

All of this leads to relatability, uniqueness, memorability, visibility, and recognition. :

  • Relatability: Showcasing your personality makes you relatable and builds empathy and rapport.

  • Uniqueness: Your personal brand is unique to you, helping you stand out from the crowd.

  • Memorability: A strong personal brand ensures you're top of mind for industry opportunities.

  • Visibility and Recognition: Regularly sharing content increases your visibility in chosen networks.

  • Confidence: Reflecting on your skills and unique qualities boosts your self-confidence.

📊 Less People Quitting, Hiring Still Slow

The January 2024 JOLTS report is out, and it's telling us that the frenzy of quitting and job hopping might be taking a breather. With a quits rate dipping to 2.1%—the lowest since August 2020—it seems like more folks are choosing to stick with their current gigs. Layoffs are still on the low side, suggesting that job security is holding strong despite a cooling job market. This could mean a shift in the wind for those looking to leap into new opportunities. Here's what you need to keep in mind:

  • Quitting is less common now, with the rate falling below pre-pandemic levels.

  • Hiring has slowed, but job security remains high for the employed.

  • Layoffs are “rare”, staying lower than their pre-pandemic lows.

  • Voluntary quits were still high in 2023, but the trend might change this year, influencing wage growth and inflation.
