🌴 Remote Work Interest and Availability at Odds
Remote interest stabilizes near all-time high
Three years post the onset of COVID-19, remote work continues to be significant in the US job market. Despite a recent decrease in flexible work postings, job seekers still actively pursue remote/hybrid roles.
Remote postings falling over the past year
Although the enthusiasm of job seekers for remote positions seems to have stabilized, the percentage of job advertisements promoting remote or hybrid work alternatives has decreased over the past year, dropping from a high of 10.3% on February 26, 2022, to 8.4% as of May 31, 2023. Nonetheless, this may not necessarily imply a shift in employers' attitudes towards remote work. The most significant slowdowns in hiring are likely impacting the types of jobs available, which could be a contributing factor.
Where is remote work on the rise?
Despite an overall decline in remote job postings, a closer examination shows that remote work is expanding in more sectors than it is receding. From May 2022 to 2023, remote jobs increased in 33 out of 55 analyzed categories, which account for nearly half of the job market. Civil Engineering saw the most significant increase, with remote roles jumping from 16.9% to 22.1%. Other sectors with rapidly growing remote opportunities include Social Science, Chemical Engineering, and Banking & Finance.
