 -JOB MARKET DATA & TRENDS-

📊 Tech Jobs Dip, Others Hold in 2024

The February 2024 US Labor Market Update from Indeed Hiring Lab indicates that while tech jobs may remain below pre-pandemic levels, in-person sectors are maintaining stability. The post-holiday period saw a slight increase in job searches, but job postings did not show significant growth.

  • Tech-related job postings are 25% below pre-pandemic levels, declining 2.7% in the last three months.

  • Postings in sectors with a high share of remote-eligible roles have declined as well, falling to 8% below pre-pandemic baselines, while demand for in-person sectors remains above pre-pandemic norms.

  • Out of the 47 total sectors tracked by Indeed, job postings as of Feb. 16 were down compared to pre-pandemic levels in only 8 sectors — the level of opportunities in the remaining 39 sectors is still above pre-pandemic baselines.

🧑‍✈️ Building Bridges - Leverage the Knowledge & Experience of Alumni

It cannot be overstated the importance the role of the Alumni Network plays in the layoff process. Maintaining the bridge from the side of the employee does not necessarily mean maintaining a relationship with the company, but with those that are experiencing the layoff with you, or those that have been laid off in the past.

These groups can exist on Slack, WhatsApp, & Facebook & LinkedIn Groups, Subreddits, or simply a local meetup. The platform does not matter.

But why join one?!

These networks let you leverage the social and experience equity that you built at your previous company as they help foster ongoing professional relationships, offering benefits such as knowledge sharing, mentorship opportunities, and potential rehiring prospects.

Other Benefits

  • networking opportunities

  • job leads

  • professional development resources

  • emotional support

How do I find mine?

There’s no one right answer to this other than asking around after a layoff. Once your work Slack gets shut down, it may be hard to find certain people so act quick. LinkedIn is your next best bet. It’ll be easier to find those for larger companies, but even then they may be broken up by departments. WARNTracker has put together a list of Alumni Groups and the way in which they can be accessed. Check it out below to see if your company is in there.

 -THE LAYOFF REPORT-

📉 Buzzfeed, Rivian, Toast…

As the year began, 85% of workers said they feared being laid off in 2024. While pandemic overhiring contributed to many of last year’s workforce reductions, investor pressure and the pivot toward artificial intelligence appear to be driving this year’s layoffs.

So far in 2024:

41793 employees laid off
159 tech companies have done layoffs
~21% increase from last week 🤕

Notable Layoffs this Week

  • Buzzfeed is laying off 16% of its total workforce as part of a strategy shift that includes selling its media brand Complex, Axios reports.

  • Rivian plans to lay off 10% of its salaried staff this year, which Bloomberg notes is the electric vehicle makers' third round of layoffs in three years.

  • Nike is cutting 1,600 jobs in order to cut costs, The Wall Street Journal writes. The layoffs will affect about 2% of the sportswear giant's workforce.

  • NowThis News has laid off half of its union-represented employees, Variety reports. Twenty-six employees were affected.

  • Noggin, Nickelodeon's learning platform for children, is shutting down after Paramount Global laid off its entire staff, Variety reports.

  • Restaurant software company Toast said it plans to lay off 550 workers, CNBC reports. That's about 10% of employees.
