“You have the right to work, but never to the fruit of work. You should never engage in action for the sake of reward…Those who are motivated only by desire for the fruits of action are miserable, for they are constantly anxious about the results of what they do.”
TL;DR
Microsoft offered exits to about 60,000 people Monday, then reported $36.6 billion in quarterly profit Wednesday. TrueUp counts 197,640 tech layoffs in 2026.
Washington pays volunteers unemployment only if the employer announced a “layoff or reduction in force” in writing, and Microsoft's published memo uses neither phrase.
Move of the week: offered a buyout anywhere? Before you sign, ask HR in writing whether it's part of a planned layoff or reduction in force.

🚨 The Big Story
Microsoft's exit memo never says ‘layoff’
What happened: Microsoft offered a “Voluntary Exit Offer” Monday to about 60,000 employees, roughly a quarter of the company, at level 70 and below in the US, UK, Canada, and India. Takers have until the first week of December to decide and leave December 31. Two days later Microsoft reported $92.3 billion in quarterly revenue, up 19%, and $36.6 billion in profit, up 32%. The memo
New since our LinkedIn post Tuesday: The package is Microsoft's standard severance (base pay by tenure and level, continued vesting, healthcare for a fixed period), without the extended healthcare that sold this spring's retirement offer. Microsoft says it isn't a replacement for layoffs, and The Seattle Times reports it expects fewer than 3,000 takers. Meanwhile Indeed's postings index for Seattle sits at 67, among the lowest in the country. GeekWire
Our take: Washington's new law, RCW 50.20.055, counts a volunteer as unemployed “through no fault of their own” only when the employer announced in writing that it “planned to reduce its workforce through a layoff or reduction in force” and that employees could offer to be included. It excludes an employer that “encourages early retirement or early separation” without that announcement. RCW 50.20.055 Microsoft's published memo offers “a new choice” to people “considering a future outside the company.”
The closest it gets is “another way to adapt their workforce.” “Layoff” and “reduction in force” never appear. In Washington, that wording can decide whether a taker collects up to $1,208 a week for 26 weeks ($31,408) or gets treated as a quit. ESD rules on each claim and hasn't said how it'll read this one. Asking 60,000 people to volunteer in a $36.6 billion quarter, then leaving the volunteers holding that risk, is a choice.
What to watch:
Your own packet. The law looks at what the employer announced in writing. Your offer email may say more than the blog post.
The calendar, if you're 40 or older. For a group exit program with an age-claims waiver, the EEOC says you get at least 45 days to consider, 7 to revoke, and the ages and job titles of who was and wasn't eligible. Count the days on your packet. EEOC
Your move:
Email HR one question: “Is this offer part of a planned layoff or reduction in force?” Save the written answer with your packet.
On an H-1B? A December 31 exit starts a grace period of up to 60 days. Talk to an immigration lawyer before you accept.

📉 The Layoff Report
Dropbox's ‘profitable’ cut, Amazon devices, Innodata
Dropbox: October 28. About 200 roles, 9% of the company, across engineering, product, design, and G&A, and CTO Ali Dasdan is leaving. Co-CEO Ashraf Alkarmi's memo opens its “why” section with “Our business is profitable.” For most, the last day was the same day. Business Insider
Amazon: October 28. Up to 250 jobs in devices and services, mostly software development, after weeks of Kindle and tablet launches. It follows a retail cut of fewer than 1,000 earlier this month. Reuters
Innodata: October 26. About 550 people in India, per India Today, plus more in the Philippines. Workers say laptops logged out mid-shift and termination notices landed in personal inboxes. The AI training-data company's notice blamed the “ramp-down of the business assignment.” People Matters
Smaller cuts, same week: SolarEdge (about 200, 10%, its fourth round since January 2024), GovTech (38), Sony's Sucker Punch (24), and an Intel WARN notice for 67 in Folsom.
Bottom line: TrueUp counts 197,640 tech workers laid off in 2026 across 674 events, up about 2,800 since last week, now including eBay's 1,000 and EA's 400. That's 654 people a day. TrueUp

☀ The Bright Spot
Serval plans to hire 500 more people
Serval, which builds automation agents for IT teams, raised $150 million at a $3 billion valuation this week and plans to hire more than 500 people, including 100-plus automation engineers who'll work on-site with customers. It's opening offices in New York, London, and Austin to go with its San Francisco headquarters. A company adding 500 jobs in a week like this one earns a look. SiliconANGLE

🧠 The Hiring Manager’s Brain
They're hiring people who check AI's work
The insight: Software postings on Indeed are up almost 15% since February 2025, and senior roles drove 71% of the growth from May 2025 to May 2026. Indeed economist Sneha Puri told CNBC employers still need developers to oversee AI's output and help clients put it to work. Using AI is “a great place to start,” she said, but “communication, interpersonal skills and leadership are also really important.” CNBC
What to do about it: Rewrite your top resume bullet around judgment: what AI produced, what you reviewed or caught, and what shipped. Swap “Used Copilot daily” for something like “Owned review of agent-written pull requests for a team of 8.” The second version shows the judgment they're paying for.

📊 Trends & Data (What the numbers are saying)
AI postings hit 7.3%. Software sits at 78.
AI-related postings now make up 7.3% of all Indeed postings, past their 2022 peak of 3.3%. Data center postings are up 147% from June 2024. Indeed Hiring Lab
Overall postings sit at 103.8 against February 2020's 100. Software development sits near 78.
Goldman estimates up to 9% of workers, about 15 million, could be displaced by AI over a decade, and says automation-related disruption “accelerates during cyclical slowdowns.” Fortune
What this means for you: The openings are moving toward AI and infrastructure, and toward people senior enough to supervise both. If you're deciding on a buyout in Seattle, price in a longer search.
