❤️🩹 Self-Care Essentials After a Layoff
Nothing can properly prepare you for the emotional ups and downs that getting laid off will inject into your life. The self-doubt, anxiety, fear, and optimism followed by rejections. Job seeking is a full on contact sport and we need to train and prepare as such. This means that both our mind and body needs to be in peak performance for extended periods of time. While the following methods aren’t always easy to stick stick to, fundamentally they are pretty straightforward.
Maintain a Routine
Action: Create and adhere to a daily schedule. If you have family responsibilities like school drop-offs, incorporate them into your routine. If not, set specific times for job searching, skill-building, and relaxation.
Why: A structured day provides a sense of normalcy and focus, making it easier to tackle the challenges of job searching.
Invest in Well-Being
Action: Allocate time each day for physical exercise, whether it's a home workout or a gym session. Incorporate mindfulness practices like meditation and breathing exercises into your daily routine.
Why: Regular exercise and mindfulness practices have been shown to improve mental health, reduce stress, and increase focus. These benefits make you more resilient and effective in your job search.
Help Others, Help Yourself
Action: When you find yourself feeling low or overwhelmed, take a break to assist someone else. This could be as simple as checking in on a friend or volunteering your skillset for organizations that could greatly benefit from it.
Why: Research shows that acts of kindness can boost your mood and energy levels. This positive shift in your emotional state can make you more effective in your job search.
Dive Deeper: We previously wrote a piece on Tech-lanthropy in a previous post that outlines a number of places to volunteer your skills. We dive into it in the section below as well.
Reconnect and Network
Action: Use your newfound time to reconnect with old friends, former colleagues, or even mentors. Update them on your situation and ask about theirs. You never know who might have a useful lead or advice.
Why: Networking is a powerful tool in job searching. Additionally, maintaining social connections contributes to better mental health, which in turn makes you more resilient in your job search.

🛟 Tech-Lanthropy: Using your skills to help those in need!
When you're busy helping someone in need, whether it's through volunteering or providing support, it can be a powerful distraction from your own problems. It allows you to shift your focus away from your own challenges and instead channel your energy and efforts toward positively impacting someone else's life.
By selflessly giving back, you often find a renewed sense of purpose and fulfillment, and it can provide a fresh perspective on your own situation. Helping others can be a meaningful way to gain perspective, find joy in making a difference, and gain a sense of gratitude for what you have.
If you’re looking to get out of a rut, below are some organizations that you can get started with:
